Business Immigration Programs Canada

The Canadian government offers various immigration pathways for those interested in starting any form of business in the country. There are immense business opportunities available for businessmen, investors, self-employed persons, and anyone with an entrepreneurial mindset. These pathways are operated by the federal, provincial, and territorial governments.

The Government of Canada welcomes investors, business managers, and entrepreneurs with open hands as they keep looking for every possible way of boosting their economy.

Your experience and business skills are viewed as invaluable assets that can contribute to the country’s fast-growing, diverse economy.

If you have been striving to launch a business in Canada, you must first decide which pathway to choose. You must also decide on a province or territory to launch your business because, based on your choice, you must then select a business immigration program to follow.

Federal Business Immigration Programs

Federal Business Immigration Programs are designed for business persons with a proven track record of success looking to settle in any province in Canada. If you want to take your business to Canada and settle down there, you can choose from one of the many Federal Business Immigration programs.

Quebec Business Immigration Programs

Quebec runs its own business immigration program that’s different from those available across the country. Business immigrants looking to immigrate to Quebec province can choose from a wide choice of investor, self-employed, and entrepreneur immigration programs. Quebec’s business immigration programs are best-suited for those looking for entrepreneurial diversity.

Provincial Nominee Programs for Business

Each province and territory run its own Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Many of them have a stream for applicants with entrepreneurial experience. Each PNP stream has its unique eligibility criteria and application procedures. Those who are successful are given a provincial nomination. This provincial nomination qualifies them to apply for permanent residence at the federal level.

Programs for Entrepreneurs

Federal Start-up Visa Program

The Start-Up Visa Program by the federal government is aimed at immigrant entrepreneurs. They are encouraged to run businesses in Canada. Successful applicants can connect with private sector organizations in Canada. They receive funding, support, and expertise in launching and operating their enterprise in Canada. The Start-Up Visa targets new entrepreneurs with the potential to build organizations that can create jobs and compete globally.

Quebec Entrepreneur Program

The Quebec Entrepreneur Program offers qualified business owners the prospect of obtaining Canadian permanent residence. To achieve this, they must create or purchase an agricultural, commercial, or industrial business in the province of Quebec.

Provincial Entrepreneur Programs

Canada’s provinces offer various entrepreneur categories within their Provincial Nominee Programs. Entrepreneurs can migrate and settle in any province of their choice through one of these categories.

Programs for Self-Employed Applicants

Federal Self-Employed Persons Program

Under this program, applicants trying to migrate to Canada must prove their experience in categories/fields such as arts, agriculture, or athletics. Such applicants can be self-employed in Canada and contribute substantially to the area of their choice.

Quebec Self-Employed Category

The Quebec Self-Employed category allows applicants to obtain Canadian permanent residence if they have relevant experience in any trade or profession as approved by the authorities.

Provincial Nominee Program

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is operated by all provinces and territories across the country. The program allows provinces and territories to suggest immigration candidates who can contribute to their economies.

Start-Up Visa Program

This program grants permanent residence to immigrant entrepreneurs while assisting them in setting up their new businesses in Canada. Immigrant enterprises can look forward to getting support from the province authorities if they qualify for the program. Successful applicants can connect with private sector organizations and receive support through guidance, expertise-sharing, and funding.

Eligibility Requirements

This program aims to recruit innovative foreign national entrepreneurs who will create new jobs and drive economic growth.

An applicant for a Start-Up Visa must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum level proficiency of CLB 5 in English or French.
  • Demonstrate access to sufficient funds to settle in Canada.
  • Show eagerness to settle in a province except for Quebec.
  • Clear all security and medical tests.
  • Provide proof of support for their business from a designated organization.
  • Confirm that the company meets all ownership requirements.

Investment Requirements

The IRCC or Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has listed several angel investor groups, venture capital funds, and business incubator organizations to support and participate in the Start-Up Visa program.

Successful applicants must ensure a minimum investment for their Canadian start-up. The investment must be at least $200,000 from a designated Canadian venture capital fund. It must be at least $75,000 from an angel investor group.

Entrepreneurs, investors, and business owners have several options available to them depending on the funds available with them to invest in Canada. For instance, the Quebec Immigrant Investor program allows individuals to immigrate to Canada if they make a passive investment that the Canadian government secures.

Applicants with a net worth of at least CAD 10 million are eligible to participate in the Investor Venture Capital Pilot Program. They must demonstrate that their funds have been gained through legal business investment activities such as commercial ventures, for-profit businesses, or through business activities in the private sector.

Those aiming to migrate to Canada using the Canadian investor visa route must have their funds to invest in a venture. The capital investment must come from their personal wealth. However, an upfront investment is not needed if you have planned to enter the business immigration sector through the Federal Startup Visa and Self-Employed programs.

Interested business immigrants looking for more active investment can choose the Entrepreneur and Provincial Nominee pathway. This program requires individuals to invest in and operate a business in Canada. The Entrepreneur Start-Up Visa Program is another excellent option. Since there are so many options available to entrepreneurs, they might get confused about which pathway is the right one for them.
